Ever since India been under the colonial rule, it has been a custom of us to get things approved by foreign establishments. And anything foreign seems superior to us, be it either commercial products or ideas. We have always given undue importance to foreign opinion. Our political discourse has never been different from this murky attitude. When the Un-Progressive Alliance(UPA) government's defacto Prime Minister had the brickbats hurled from foreign press, the hue and cry raised was though if a revolt had started against his beleaguered government. The same hyper reaction has been displayed by our media and so-called elite group, for the British High Commissioner's tour to GandhiNagar calling upon the Gujarat CheifMinister.
The usually ridiculous behavior of our media went to abysmal low when they questioned if the British Government endorsed Mr.Modi. Why should we expect a foreign government to endorse a cheif minister elected out of popular vote? Are we still a dominion of the Queen's Great Britain?
There has always been a taboo reaction from the Western Governments, when they deal with Narendra Modi. There is no denial of the fact that the Gujarat riots took place in 2002. Having said that, those weren't the first riots that took place in our independent history. Perhaps this has also been the first mass violence in the country, that was dealt with the severity it needs and the offenders were brought under justice. In that regard, is the track record of the so called progressive and self appointed human-right saviors - the western governments impressive?
These are the governments those endorse the rogue activities of Israel towards the neighboring countries. These are the nations which took part in massacre of Iraqis and Afghans. These are the nations that approve the heinous crimes that are carried out in foreign countries against innocent civilians in the name of "War on Terror". And the British commissioner should have been imagining to live in the imperialistic past of his country when it was demolishing the sovereignty of various nations, when he said, it was not an endorsement of Mr.Modi. India is neither Queen Victoria's empire nor he the Viceroy endorsing princely states.
He had also termed his endeavor, re-engagement with Gujarat. Engaging Gujarati men had always been difficult for your nation, Mr. High Commissioner. Would like to remind you of two Gujaratis whom your ancestors couldn't ever engage. One, Mr. Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi and two, Sardar Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel.
And it is a deride on the Indian voter, that this would influence him/her to vote for Mr. Modi, first in the upcoming Gujarat state elections and next in the looming sixteenth general elections. If we are to imagine that a decade of irreversible progress in Gujarat cannot convince the voter, but a visit by a foreign secretary to the CMO can, we must be devaluing basic tenets of democracy and our independence. I would call it just a trade mission and anything more read into this visit is derisive engagement.
